scentric is a music player and song collection organiser
based on GStreamer
and Gtk+.
How is it different from all the others?
Just like all the other music organisers, scentric tries to
suck a little bit less than all the others. Here is how we
are trying to achieve that:
scentric takes a song-centric approach to your music collection:
your playlists will stay the same even if you rename,
retag, move or temporarily delete and then later restore files.
hierarchical and intuitive playlist organisation: if you sort songs
into a playlist, they will automatically become part of all parent
playlists (picture needed).
elegant, slick playlist that shows you all the information you need
in a way that pleases the eye.
The colours are configurable and easy to change of course (picture needed).
easy audio output method configuration: scentric will detect what
audio output methods are available, if you have the required GStreamer plugins
installed, and recommend one to you. No need to mess around with GConf
or to try and guess options that might make things work (picture needed).
plugin architecture for the player interface: if you are a programmer,
you can write your own player user interface plugin and display the currently
playing song info and control buttons in whatever way you like. And even if
you are not a programmer, you can still choose from multiple designs and pick
the one you like best (picture needed).
supports .cue files, ie. you can have a whole album as one single
file with the individual tracks showing up separately in the playlist,
so that you can easily jump to the appropriate position within the file.
What about the usual features?
Supported audio formats: mp3, ogg/vorbis, flac, wav
(other formats are easy to add if there are already
GStreamer decoder plugins available).
Plays Audio CDs and retrieves the track info automatically
from freecddb.org.
Tag editor that also allows you to retag songs for which you
have no write permissons (at the time of writing, June 2004, tag changes
only affect the scentric database and are not written back to file yet).
Musicbrainz support: Don't know anything about a song? Just too lazy
to type in all the information yourself? No problem, scentric can calculate
a digital audio signature and use the Musicbrainz database
to find out the artist, title, album, track number, and release year for you.
All you have to do is select the right candidate from the list of candidates
(pictures needed).
System tray icon showing the currently playing title
when hovering above it; a context menu provides quick access
to often-used functions (pictures needed).
Different view modes: normal, compact, and freestyle
Is that all? No master plan?
Funny you should ask. Of course there is a master plan.
For now we're just trying to write a great audio player though.
